Georgia Highlands College was recently a part of the American Diabetes Association's 11th Annual “Kiss a Pig” contest.

Different organizations and businesses in Rome were involved in the effort. Each business volunteered someone to kiss a pig if they raised the most money.

Jon Hershey, associate professor of English, was Georgia Highlands College's entry to kiss a pig if Georgia Highlands College won the contest.

Ashley Wood, director of student life, and Ken Reaves, director of human resources, along with student leaders, helped the fundraiser come together.

Along with taking donations, there was a silent auction to help raise the funds. Students and faculty of Georgia Highlands College donated a wide variety of items to the auction. Everything from food to collectibles to a car wash by FC president, Dr. Randy Pierce, was bid on.

The final amount collected by Georgia Highlands College was approximately $400.

The actual Kiss A Pig event took place on Wednesday, April 10, at 12:15 p.m., at The Forum, in Rome.

Kyle Jones, principal of West End Elementary School and Doug Walker of WRGA radio, got to kiss the pig.Jones raised $6,900, while Walker was close behind with $5,500.

The total amount raised by all participants, including Georgia Highlands College, was almost $23,000.
