Students to be recognized at Honors Assembly

The 35th annual Georgia Highlands College Honors Assembly will be held Thursday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Lakeview Auditorium on the Floyd campus.

Dr. Randy Pierce, president of Georgia Highlands College, will make opening remarks.

John Spranza, director of student life, will be the master of ceremonies.

Family and friends of the award recipients are welcome to attend.

The Business Merit Award will go to Amin Lalani. This award is given to a business major that has completed 30 semester hours, maintained a 3.4 GPA and exhibits potential for success in the business environment.

The Educational Foundation of the Georgia Society of CPAs' Certificate of Excellence in the Study of Principles of Accounting Award will go to Megan Tanner for excellence in the study of the principles of accounting.

The Warren Akin IV Excellence in English Studies Award, which is given to students who have demonstrated excellence in writing ability and personal interest in literature and who have at least a 3.0 GPA, will be given to Megan J. Dixon and Erica L. Baker.

The Excellence in Spanish Award recognizes an outstanding student in intermediate Spanish who excels academically and shows a positive attitude toward the subject and learning in general. The Cartersville campus recipient is April M. Newman, and the Floyd campus recipient is Joshua K. Owens.

Mauricia Pledger will receive the Jim McKeel Human Services Achievement Award. This award is given to students that demonstrate commitment to the field of Human Services and are involved in volunteer experiences and demonstrate a genuine concern for the community.

Joshua Kelley will receive the Journalism Award. This award recognizes a student who has been on the newspaper staff for a year or more, has held a leadership position on the staff and has demonstrated exceptional journalistic achievement.

Kellyn I. Grubb will receive the Mathematics Award for high achievement in mathematics presented to the student with the highest class average in Calculus 2262 or 2263.

Adele Billman will receive the Socratic Award. This award recognizes a student who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in philosophy and strives for excellence in philosophy and evidences a spirit of inquiry.

The Barbara Holden Floyd Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship Award will be presented to Maggie Lyle. This award is for a freshman-nursing student, Floyd County resident, who has potential for exemplary professional service.

The Floyd Medical Center Greatest Dedication and Achievement in Nursing Award will be presented to Amy Waters and Alissa Hambright. This award is for students who have demonstrated outstanding clinical performance and dedication.

The Redmond Regional Medical Center Outstanding Nursing Student Award recognizes competent clinical performance and outstanding academic achievement. The recipient will be announced at the Honors Assembly.

Cindy Renee McNabb will be the recipient of the Dr. Melvin Perry American Association of University Professors Outstanding Future Educator Award. The award is presented to a student with a minimum 3.0 GPA who demonstrates an aptitude for and commitment to excellence in teaching.

The Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges Awards recognize students for their service to the college and community and for their academic average. Brittany Holcomb will receive the McCorkle Creative Society Award. This award goes to a returning student who excels in one or more artistic areas of prose, poetry, visual arts, theatrical or musical performance and who serves as a role model to other students interested in creative expression.

The Dr. Philip Dillard Achievement Award honors students who, in spite of disability, are making achievements in intellectual, social and cultural endeavors or students who enhance disability awareness in the Georgia Highlands College community by demonstrating a desire to educate and inform others about disability issues through such involvement as participation in campus organizations and activities and volunteer services. Josh Bickhart will receive this award.

The Love Borchardt Memorial Scholarship is presented to an education major that has promoted excellence in education and is awarded by the Alpha Delta Kappa educational sorority. The recipient will be Amanda Hardin.

The �Old Red Kimono� Creative Writing Awards will go to Kayla Amos (first place), Richard Eaker (second place) and Derrika Noland (third place). The �Old Red Kimono� Creative Art Awards will go to Annika Mieling (first place), Jacob Pruitt (second place) and Tara West (third place).

The All-Georgia USA Academic Team is sponsored by �USA Today,� Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges. The All-USA Academic Team competition honors excellent students for academic achievement and campus involement. The recipients will be Amin Lalani and Hannah Smith.

The Georgia College Press Association �Best in State� recognition award will given to the �Six Mile Post� staff.

The GHC Steve Burns Service Award, Spirit Award and Leadership Award recipients will be announced at the Honors Assembly.
