Money grows on trees during Spring Fling

Sam Young, a general studies major from Calhoun (center), steps up to the plate to take on his challengers during the sports round of the money tree game show. Game show host and comedian, Sean Carlin (left), explains the rules.

Easy money is attractive to most college students, which may be why students flocked to GHC's annual Spring Fling, held on the Cartersville campus on April 4 and on the Floyd campus on April 5. None of them suspected that it may not be so easy.

The halls of both campuses were filled with the smell of a cookout. In addition to getting to participate in the Money Tree game show, students at both campuses were treated to free hotdogs and chips provided by the Office of Student Life.

The main event at this year's Spring Fling was the Money Tree game show. The game consisted of a white artificial, rotating Christmas tree with a strobe-light and $5 bills clipped tightly to it.

The object of the game was to win at least one of three rounds for 20 seconds of time with the Money Tree.

There were topics for each round: Who wants to be a Chicago Bear, with a sports theme; The Weakest Think, that tested mental prowess; and Soldier of Fortune, with a military theme. Money Tree contestants on the Floyd campus scramble through fake money in order to win the real stuff.

With the time won, contestants were allowed to pull money off the tree and stuff it into an apron.

The most money, $55, was won by Ahna Dillard, a psychology major from Rome. Amanda Pofs, an education major from Centre, Al., won $50, and Sam Young, a general studies major from Calhoun, won $45.

Dillard, the first-place winner, enjoyed the opportunity to get money.

Second-place Money Tree contestant, Pofs, said what is on every college student's mind, Free money is always good. She intends to spend her winnings on car insurance.

Enthusiastic fans also took home some cash for being loud. Thirdplace contestant, Young, appreciated crowd support.

There was also money given away for smaller mini-games such as scavenger hunts for camera phones, largest tattoos and American coins with a five somewhere in the mint date.

The show was hosted by standup comedian and actor Sean Carlin, who said, I really love coming down to Georgia because of the Southern hospitality. The college students here never have bad attitudes.

The host was very energetic, said spectator Kyle Lawrence, a history major from Rome.

There was a large turn out for the game, drawing at least 75 students, faculty and staff.

Nomi Mullins, a general studies major from Big Stone Gap, Va., who was eliminated in the first round of the show said, It was fun just getting to participate.

The Office of Student Life collected Stampede cards to raffle a DVD player. The winner was Tyrone Bannister.

Sean Carlin, host of the Money Tree game show, gathered the attention of many students with his quick wit and free money grabbing opportunities.

The game consisted of three rounds and required four students for each round. The winner of every round had a chance to spend 20 seconds grabbing as many $5 bills as he or she could off the Money Tree. Excitement, nerves and anticipation rolled from student to student.

It was awesome! Lots of free money and food; the host was hilarious. We need more events like that here, said student Craig V. Jones, a general studies major from Woodstock. Students on the Cartersville campus go head-to-head in the first round of the Money Tree game show.

The first round was sports themed. Contestants had to swing a foam bat and hit the ball on the tee without using their hands or arms.

Many of them put the bat between their knees, and the contestant who hit the ball the shortest distance was eliminated.

They also had to jump rope. The student that tripped first was eliminated, but he or she did not leave empty-handed.

The contestant was given a free Money Tree tee-shirt for his or her best efforts.

The winner of the first round, Brittnee Studstill, went on to compete in the second round, which was entitled The Weakest Think.

The first challenge was to draw the state of Texas. The audience then determined who had the crappiest drawing, and that person was excused from the game.

Contestants also faced each other headtohead in an intense minute of Rubik's cubing. There was a tie, and then another tie between students Studstill and Ashlee Arnold.

The final tie-breaker was to name any two of the five actresses that played Catwoman. Arnold named Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, and then advanced to the third round.

The third round, Soldier of Fortune, was military style. The contestants threw foam rescue jets, and the closest pilots to the Black Hawk down moved forward in the game.

Two more stages of spy gear wearing competition ended the round with Arnold winning again and gaining another 20 seconds on the Money Tree.

In just 20 seconds, Studstill was able to take away $55, which she said she would spend for fun. Arnold had 40 seconds and walked away with $90 in her pocket.

The cheers were loud and the music was modern. Overall, students were excited.
