Old Red Kimono seeks student contributions of art and poetry

By Chris Hammonds
Assistant Editor

The deadline for contributions to the 31st annual Old Red Kimono (ORK) is closing in.Working in the ORK office.

The magazine is published in April and funded by the Student Activity Fee, but contributors are not limited to Floyd students and faculty. Anyone may contribute works of poetry, short fiction, photography, painting or other visual arts.

The Old Red Kimono has been running since 1971. After some 30+ years of publication, the ORK has made quite a name for itself, allowing for international recognition and wide readership.

“We receive submissions from all over the United States, Canada and we’ve even published some from overseas,” said Lanelle Daniel, faculty adviser.

With so many entries, having to pick what will be published proves to be no easy task. “The editors have to make some tough choices,” said Daniel, and “there can be a lot of disappointment.”

The staff consists of art editor, Ty Morgan, and literature editors Matthew Sunrich and Jessica Lindburg. Dr. Nancy Applegate and Daniel are faculty advisers, and new art professor Brian Barr serves as art consultant.

The ORK also hosts a contest for poetry and art. The first prize of each contest is $50, with a second and third prize of $30 and $10, respectively. They are funded by the Rome Area Council for the Arts and entry is free. Winners will also receive a certificate of recognition.

Contributions for the Old Red Kimono can be submitted to the ORK box in the Social and Cultural Division office by the deadline of March 1.

The writer or artist’s name, mailing address and email address should be printed on each submission. Would-be contributors worried about the safety of their work can rest assured. “The secretaries are there all the time, and it’s very safe there,” Daniel said.

Alternately, submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to ORK at Georgia Highlands College, PO Box 1864, Rome, GA 30162-1864.
