FC abroad: Germany and central Europe

Georgia Highlands College students participating in the study abroad program went to parts of central Europe for two weeks last June. This 10-day tour of Berlin, Munich, Prague, Potsdam and the Swiss Alps earned students up to six hours credit for HIST 1121 and 1122. Dr. Jim Cook, FC professor emeritus and part-time professor of history, was the trip coordinator.

Next summer Cook will be coordinating a study abroad trip entitled "Gems of Italy." The trip are dates June 3-12. Students will visit the cities of Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice, as well as places such as Pompeii and the Sistine Chapel. Students can earn independent study credit for HIST 1121 or HIST 1122. Teachers can receive three SDUs through RESA.

Students saw Neuschwanstein Castle, otherwise known as Mad Ludwig's Castle, built in the mid 1800s. Disney based its Sleeping Beauty's Castle on this castle.

Students visited Dachau Memorial Site, where the Dachau Concentration Camp once stood. The International Monument, seen here, was built in 1956, and is located between the former sevice building and roll call square, where prisoners lined up to be counted twice a day.
