On September 18, Nicole Levering officially began her role as the new athletic director.
“This is my dream job,” Levering said. “I just love sports, man, it’s just always been a part of my life and a bigger part of my family.”
Levering emphasized the importance of high academic standards for student-athletes. “I’d really like to raise the standards for all of our teams in terms of academics and our team GPAs, and that’s something that I intend to monitor gradually each semester so we can make sure that we’re making improvements.”
A self-described “JUCO bandit” at heart, Levering would not be here without her own student-athlete experience, where she played two years at Seminole State College in Orlando, Florida, before finishing her career at Trevecca Nazarene University.
“My student-athlete experience changed my life,” Levering said. “I had some tremendous coaches from the junior college level to my time at Trevecca, and they really inspired me and helped instill confidence and leadership skills that made me realize, ‘Hey, I think I do want to get into coaching.’”
Her career includes time as a graduate assistant coach at the University of North Alabama and as a coach at South Georgia State College and Georgia Southwestern, where she also began an administrative role.
“My first administrative duty was to work with community service and to get our student athletes involved,” Levering said. “I really put myself out there to meet a lot of people in the communities, and we ended up being number one in the country in community service in 2021.”
Levering gave a message of encouragement to our student-athletes for the upcoming year. “Integrity first, control the controllables in your life and make sure that our priorities are in the right order. We want to be student-athletes of high integrity and character.”
The best way to make this happen, according to Levering, is her new key phrase: “Charge Forward.”
“We want to build upon the resources that we have available right now and continue the growth and success of just charging forward, right?” She said, “The Chargers are moving forward.”
