The Creative Writing Club on the Cartersville Campus has recently elected a new president and vice president to represent the club.
Elections were held on the club’s Discord server. On Sept. 30, the club elected student Mar Diaz as the new president and student Brandon Wheeler as vice president.
“I think that I can really bring this Creative Writing Club to life,” Diaz said. “I believe in it and I feel passionate about it.”
As the new president, Diaz’s responsibilities include hosting meetings as well as working with the club’s advisor, Professor Conner Sutton, to organize events. Meanwhile, Wheeler’s job includes organizing communication in the club’s Discord server and putting together the official email address.
Diaz hopes to make the Creative Writing Club an encouraging environment for other members. She is working on giving out journals, pens and stationery as incentives for the club members.
“We’re trying to promote the ability of writers to start small, and then go bigger,” Wheeler said. “It’s a gradual process.”
Diaz, Wheeler and Sutton have several plans in motion and are developing new ones. For example, the club will hold a meeting that includes a horror-themed writing assignment, after which members will share their stories and make edits together.
A big goal in the club’s plans is for their works to be published. “We really want students to be involved with the Old Red Kimono, the literary magazine,” Sutton said. “We also want to push past that as well and get them comfortable submitting work and to experience a mix of rejection letters and successes.”
One particular event that has been planned since Diaz and Wheeler’s election is the Halloween Writing Marathon. This event was pitched by the English Majors Association as a collaboration between themselves and the Creative Writing Club. It will take place at the Floyd campus on Oct. 31.
“We have so many people that like to write horror,” Sutton said. “We all agreed that this is the perfect event for us, so why not?”
During a meeting on Oct. 17, Diaz and Wheeler anticipated four or five participants. As the meeting went on, more people continued to join. By the end of the meeting, Wheeler’s roster showed 10 people. The club is continuously growing since the election of its new president and vice president.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction to lift this club from the ground up,” Diaz said. “I’m excited to see where we go in the future.”
