Thanksgiving Is a time when families come together to eat traditional foods, play games and catch up on each other’s lives. But in recent years, are Thanksgiving traditions changing and adapting?
A survey of students revealed that most celebrate Thanksgiving with annual family gatherings. Jesse Earwood said his family meets at his sister’s house to ensure there is enough space for their large group. They enjoy each other’s company while waiting for the food to finish, say a prayer and eat together.
The purpose of Thanksgiving is to gather and appreciate the company of loved ones. A large part of this holiday’s importance is recognizing gratitude for the important things in life.
Although, how do students define what they are thankful for? This could include family, friends, jobs, school, pets or opportunities they’ve received.
Molly Pope, a student, said, “Thanksgiving is special to me because it is a time of reflection to look back on the year and see how I have grown as a person. It also reminds me of all the things I should be thankful for, like my family, friends and the opportunities I have received.” Her perspective highlights that Thanksgiving can hold deeper significance beyond gathering to share a meal.
Thanksgiving traditions continue to reflect a traditional family-centered celebration rather than the popular concept of “Friendsgiving.”
According to NPR’s Article on Thanksgiving Traditions, “Though Thanksgiving is traditionally family-focused, many aren’t able to or don’t want to see their family during this time of year. “Friendsgiving” parties have become a popular way to connect and celebrate with found family.”
This can be a result of many different things, but the important part is to celebrate in whatever way feels best for each person’s situation.
“Thanksgiving is special to me because I get to spend it with my family and it’s a time to give thanks for everything,” student Zannah Wade said.
Whether spent with family or friends, Thanksgiving offers an opportunity for self-reflection and gratitude for the experiences of the past year.
