On Nov. 11, GHC celebrated Veterans Day to honor all the men and women who have served our country. On Nov. 11 and 12, the Cartersville and Floyd campuses held special events to commemorate the day.
Veteran Affairs Coordinator Amy Wise set up merchandise tables outside of the Veteran Affairs Office that displayed many different shirts, hats, lanyards and pins to choose from.
The merchandise showed appreciation for veterans and their service. The tables allowed Veteran Affairs to share information about resources and support available to veterans.
The V.A. Office provides several opportunities for veteran students, certifying more than 200 students for V.A. education benefits each year. Eligibility for this benefit depends on previous military service or if a student has a disabled parent or spouse due to military service.
Other education benefits include the Montgomery GI Bill, the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Dependent Education Assistance (DEA) and 1606, which covers benefits for the Reserve and National Guard.
“We always want to make sure that what we’re doing is setting them up for success, regardless of what that is to a student,” Wise said.
These programs have had a major impact on veteran students. “It gave me the opportunity to use the Federal Work-Study and it has helped me progress my education for both of my degrees,” student Stephen Chester said.
A few veterans on campus shared how the military impacted their lives.
“I spent my whole life in the Department of Defense,” said Mike Metelko, professor of political science. “The lessons it taught me and the people I met made it a wonderful experience—though not always an easy one.”
Veterans Day offers an opportunity to honor those who have served the country. Their service and the countless sacrifices they have made are deeply appreciated.
