The Student Government Association, or SGA, had several plans and events in the works this semester. Students and campus faculty made up the organization and worked together in the interest of the student body.
“It is good practice for students to be involved at their school and to have a sense of community,” said SGA president Josephine Tolsma. “But I think it is also really good practice to be able to use what we’re doing at the school and actually help the communities around us as well.”
SGA helped several clubs plan meetings and events and spread the word to other students. They assisted with the most recent book club meeting and a pizza party hosted by the Highlands Writer’s Guild.
“All of our clubs are doing their own thing, ensuring that all students are welcome and have a space where they can meet new people and find new interests,” said Madison Signoret, student engagement assistant coordinator.
Other events in development included a Halloween event led by LaTascha Echols, the director of tutoring and learning support. Details were still being finalized at the time. The second annual homecoming was also being planned for the week of Oct. 13.
SGA and the homecoming court collected ideas for the event. Several sporting events, including volleyball, softball and baseball games, took place that weekend. The SGA also discussed free lunches and merchandise giveaways.
“We had fun activities for students to get involved in. And those activities varied depending on the campus to ensure that all campuses got a chance,” Signoret said.
Tolsma became SGA president at the beginning of the year, moving up from her previous role as vice president. The SGA did not have a vice president at the time and was looking to fill the position.
“We were looking for somebody who was supportive of what we were trying to do as an organization. It is a position that looks good on a resume, obviously, but we wanted somebody in that role who could take responsibility, show up when it matters and help people even when it’s not convenient,” Tolsma said.
Students interested in this position or any role with the SGA were encouraged to email Signoret at [email protected]
SGA continued to create opportunities that strengthened student connection and campus spirit. Open SGA positions offered students a chance to shape campus life while building valuable skills.
