The Cartersville campus library is now open Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Recurring responses to the library’s survey requested weekend availability. With the help of Library Associate Ed Bonza, they were able to meet that request.
“It has been a recurring theme when we asked students about our hours of operation that they always want weekend hours so we felt like it was time to press out and try it out,” Director of Library Services Jessica Osborne said.
The new Sunday hours are a trial run to evaluate student involvement. If enough students use the library during that time, it will become a staple at the Cartersville campus and eventually at every campus.
For now, Sunday staffing is limited to one library assistant, but if demand and student involvement increases, more library assistants will be added.
“It’s an excellent opportunity for students to get away from home on the weekends and come to a space where they’re used to studying and working— where there’s quiet space, Wi Fi and they can complete their assignments,” Osborne said. “It’s also a great opportunity because most assignments are due on Sunday night at 11:59, so this is right before that.”
Students using the library during the new hours shared their thoughts.
“Mondays are all my tests usually, that’s why I’m doing it on Sundays. I was like, good thinking it’s open Sundays because Mondays are the due dates,” student Celina Leon-Cisneros said.
“I feel like it gives me somewhere that is a more productive environment for me to get my job done on a Sunday,” student Isaac Figueroa said.
“Its more time to just come in, and you have more access to resources and books and stuff,” student Hannah Toler said.
The extended Sunday hours give students a chance to finish their work more effectively over the weekend.
